1. Do I have enough iron in my body?
The German Society for Nutrition (DGE) recommends a daily iron intake of 10 to 15 mg for an adult. Children should consume about 10 mg of iron per day. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are recommended to take in large amounts, as they have to supply the unborn child as well. They should take in about 20 to 30 mg of iron a day.
2 How can I increase my iron level?
If you suffer from an iron deficiency, you should definitely change your diet to iron-rich foods. Iron is found in both animal and vegetable products. The supplementation of iron in the form of food supplements can be very helpful in this respect. On the one hand, you can quickly correct your deficiency, on the other hand, it helps to maintain a constant iron level.
There are various ways of determining if your iron level is too low. The best way to determine the iron level is to have a blood sample taken by your family doctor.
There are basically three laboratory values that are relevant:
Measurement of the haemoglobin value (blood pigment in the blood):
Standard values: women: 12 g/dl, men: 13 g/dl
Measurement of the erythrocytes (number of red blood cells in the blood):
Standard values: women: 4.1 - 5.2 million/µl, men: 4.5 - 5.9 million/µl
Measurement of the haematocrit (proportion of solid components in the blood):
Women: 37-45%, men: 43-49%
3. how long should you wait between taking iron and magnesium?
Taking magnesium can affect the absorption of iron to a small extent. A separate intake only slightly changes the effectiveness of the active ingredients. If you want to be sure that both substances do not influence each other, you can alternatively take a short break between the intake of both substances. It is recommended to do this at an interval of about three hours.
4. who has an increased iron requirement?
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Children in growth
- Vegetarian
- Vegan
- Athletes
- Seniors due to poor supply of vital substances
- cardiac insufficiency
- Renal diseases
- Cancer diseases
